Open Call Auditions

Monday, October 21 & Tuesday, October 22, 5:30–9:00 p.m.

Doors open for registration 15 minutes prior to audition start time; Final registration accepted 30 minutes before the end of auditions.

Callback Auditions

Tuesday, October 29, 6:00–10:00 p.m.

Exact callback times to be determined by artistic staff after the completion of open call auditions.

Audition Preparation

Please prepare 32 bars of a comedic, up-tempo musical theater selection and a 30-second comedic monologue. Selection from DROOD are encouraged, but not required. Please provide sheet music in the appropriate key; an accompanist will be provided.

Character Descriptions

CHAIRPERSON CARTWRIGHT OF THE MUSIC HALL ROYALE – Any gender, any age over 40ish. The leader of the music hall troupe. The Chairperson carries the majority of the dialogue and must be quick with a joke and able to improvise. They are in charge of keeping the pace of the show moving.
Vocal Range: Baritone/Low Alto

Actors of the Music Hall Royale performing The Mystery of Edwin Drood

MR. CLIVE PAGET/JOHN JASPER – Male, 30-45ish.The Royale’s male lead, a devilishly attractive cad, and he knows it. In Drood, he is the antagonist. Choirmaster of Cloisterham Cathedral, and uncle of Edwin Drood. In love with Rosa Bud. Madness lurks beneath his smooth exterior.
Vocal Range: Bari-tenor with some huge notes.

MISS ALICE NUTTING/EDWIN DROOD – Female, 25-40ish. Prima donna and London’s leading male impersonator, charming but, as you might expect, with determination and a lot of ego. Must command the stage. As Edwin Drood, she is an attractive, rich, and popular young man who has everything.
Vocal Range: Mezzo with a strong belt.
Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

MISS DEIDRE PEREGRINE/ROSA BUD – Female, 18-30ish.The not-so-innocent ingénue of the Music Hall Royale, Deirdre portrays the love interest of Drood, the young, beautiful and apparently fragile Rosa Bud.
Vocal Range: True legit soprano with a high B natural that can’t be avoided. Also needs to belt.

MISS JANET CONOVER/HELENA LANDLESS – Female, 25-50ish. Janet is a long-standing member of the acting troupe, asked to play the cryptic Helena Landless who hails from a mysterious foreign colony.
Vocal Range: Mezzo.
Ethnicity: Seeking actors of various South Asian and Southwest Asian descents.

MR. VICTOR GRINSTEAD/NEVILLE LANDLESS – Male, 25-50ish. Victor is enjoying his premier performance with the Music Hall Royale. His character, Neville, is Helena’s twin brother. Very passionate and confrontational.
Vocal Range: Bari-tenor
Ethnicity: Seeking actors of various South Asian and Southwest Asian descents.

MR. CEDRIC MONCRIEFFE/THE REVEREND MR. CRISPARKLE – Male, 35-50ish. A troupe member who plays an archetypal vicar, who is also a bit of a lurker, and was in love with Rosa’s mother. 35-50ish. Baritone.
Vocal Range: Baritone

MISS ANGELA PRYSOCK/THE PRINCESS PUFFER – Female, any age over 40ish. Angela has been a favorite of London audiences forever, a staple of the stage. As the mysterious Princess Puffer, Madam, opium dealer and general purveyor of vice of all kinds, she is glamorous in her ruin. Must have lots of rapport with the audience
Vocal Range: Serious low alto with a strong belt.
Ethnicity: All Ethnicities

MR. NICK CRICKER/DURDLES – Male, any age over 30ish. “Clown Prince of the Royale” who makes the most of every line and plays the drunkard sexton in Drood.
Vocal Range: Baritone or Tenor

MASTER NICK CRICKER/DEPUTY - Boy, any age younger than Cricker, Sr. As the Deputy, lowest in the pecking order, and very funny. Any voice range.
Vocal Range: Any range.
Ethnicity: All Ethnicities.

MR. PHILLIP BAX/BAZZARD – Male, any age. Devotee of the theatre, the everlasting understudy. May have quite a major part if the evening turns out that way. Dance skills a plus.
Vocal Range: Bari-tenor.

VARIOUS ACTORS/CITIZENS OF CLOISTERHAM – All genders and various ages. Very busy ensemble roles. Singers, dancers. Strong comedians and improvisers a plus.

  • $255 stipend paid on opening night.

  • All auditions are held at Lyric Arts Main Street Stage, 420 E Main St, Anoka 55303.

  • Auditioners will be seen in the order they arrive. No appointments are necessary.

  • Please come prepared with headshot (or other non-returnable current photo) and résumé, if available.

  • Please arrive with a calendar outlining all possible conflict dates between the first read-through and the final performance. (No conflicts for tech week or performance dates will be accepted.)
