Nell Benjamin (1972 - ), the playwright for Lyric Arts' hilarious production of The Explorers Club, is best known for writing the score to the Broadway smash-hit, Legally Blonde The Musical, with her husband and composer Laurence O'Keefe. Benjamin's book and lyric credits also include: her free adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance, called Pirates! (or Gilbert and Sullivan Plunder'd); Sarah, Plain and Tall; and Because of Winn Dixie. Her work for television includes the last season of Unhappily Ever After and the new Electric Company. Benjamin has received the Kleban Foundation Award for lyrics and a Jonathan Larson Foundation Grant.
Benjamin holds a master's degree in women's studies from the University of Dublin, Trinity College and a B.A. from Harvard University. Benjamin and O'Keefe are currently working on a new musical about love, jealousy and violence at a Renaissance Faire, tentatively titled Huzzah!, several original movie musicals and an original opera which will premiere at LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts.
