On Friday, Oct. 13, Lyric Arts Main Street Stage was proud to present the professional debut of Resident Director and playwright Scott Ford's play, Flavio Betrayed: A Commedia. As of this season, we have been honored to have Resident Director Scott Ford share his talents with Lyric Arts for 10 years, so this seemed like the perfect timing.
"We are thrilled to support Scott by giving Flavio Betrayed its professional debut,” says Artistic and Executive Director Laura Tahja Johnson. “Scott has been an integral part of the Lyric Arts family for a long time and his work as a director has been instrumental to our artistic growth. This is Scott's tenth season with us, and it is very gratifying to be able to give back just a small portion of what he has given us. “
In honor of his 10 years, we put together this tribute video featuring his work over the years and to showcase the number of people, both on and off stage, that Scott's work has impacted.
We invite you to celebrate with us by coming to see his original play. There is no better way to honor the work of an artist than to witness it first hand. Flavio Betrayed: A Commedia will be on our stage through Oct. 29.
This original work is a ridiculously silly play and a fast-paced comedy, which includes traditional commedia conventions with a contemporary spin. Lyric Arts is delighted to support Ford’s work, and this sharp and witty show is the perfect opportunity to showcase the local talent that Anoka offers.
Scott Ford states, “Lyric Arts was instrumental in helping me to polish and refine the script. They generously hosted a staged reading of the play three years ago that provided pivotal encouragement and feedback. It was the first time I heard the dialogue, and on that night I knew for certain that Flavio Betrayed: A Commedia makes people laugh – loudly and often!”
This high-spirited comedy is filled with disguises, deceits, insults, romance, friendship, and lots of stinky cheese. Told in the traditional Commedia style with an undeniable modern flair, this romantic romp follows the delightfully convoluted story of our hero Flavio, whose best friend is trying to steal the hand of his beloved Isabella, while her father attempts to marry her off to another suitor who is considerably past his prime.
Flavio Betrayed A Commedia first performed at Coon Rapids Campus Performing Arts Center where Scott is a theatre professor and has directed over 40 shows. Scott Ford, who earned his MA from Illinois State University and received additional graduate training in Theatre at New York University and the University of Minnesota has directed numerous shows at Lyric Arts, including Wait Until Dark, The Glass Menagerie, and Boeing Boeing. “Creating a new piece of comedy has been a thrilling, daunting, and incredibly entertaining challenge,” states Ford.
