Meet Carolyn Ruck, who is performing in the ensemble in Hello, Dolly!. Read on to learn about the rehearsal process, how she is developing her character, and why you should take a chance on this show!
LA: Where are you originally from?
CR: Originally, Wisconsin. More recently, Ohio.
LA: Why did this particular musical interest you?
CR: I was in Dolly in College and I enjoy this time period.
LA: For those unfamiliar with Hello, Dolly! can you tell us about the show?
CR: Dolly Levi she apparently does everything and knows everyone. Her husband died years ago and though she has kept up some of her busy body ways she is just now pulling herself back into humanity by deciding to marry Horace Vandergelder “for his money and have it circulate among the people like rain water.” Hilarity ensues.
LA: Talk about the character(s) that you play in Hello, Dolly! How have you developed this character?
CR: As a chorus member you get to play more then one person which is just fun. I play a girl going off to school with her sister, a girl out dancing with a friend, and a lady out with her sister and her niece's and nephews.
LA: Talk about your fellow cast. How do you see their characters developing? Any that you are particularly amazed at?
CR: At every rehearsal I see an added layer to everyone's characters which is exciting.
LA: What are some of the most impressive elements of Hello, Dolly!?
CR: The costumes, though I may just be partial to them because I am a costumer at heart. This time period has a nice silhouette.
LA: What is your favorite number of the show?
CR: Probably Dancing and Motherhood March.
LA: What is your favorite musical (in theater) to watch?
LA: What was the first musical you ever saw on stage
CR: I think it was The Music Man or Once Upon a Mattress.
LA: What is your favorite thing about Lyric Arts?
CR: Everyone is so friendly!
LA: Please tell us a little bit about yourself?
CR: I enjoy reading and frolicking.
