Meet Joe Rand, who is performing as Sharktooth in How I Became a Pirate. Read on to learn about the rehearsal process, how he’s developing his character, and why you should take a chance on this show! LA: Tell us a little bit about why this particular play interested you?
JR: I really like working on the kids shows. We have so much fun goofing around and playing while we are presenting our shows. They are a chance to be over the top for the benefit of the kids in the audience.
LA: For those that are unfamiliar with How I Became a Pirate can you tell us about the show?
JR: It’s a great adaptation of the children’s book. There’s a ton of great music, in varied styles, so everyone will enjoy a part of it. There is a great cast of very different characters that you will fall in love with.
LA: What is your pirate name? How did your character get this pirate name?
JR:I play Sharktooth, the oldest and meanest Pirate. I imagine Sharktooth gets his name from the sharktooth necklace he wears. Legend has it that when he was just a young boy, Sharktooth’s mother fell overboard and was almost devoured by a shark, until he dove in and wrestled with the shark until it let go, but not before he took one of its teeth, and the shark, one of Sharktooth’s legs.
LA: Talk about your fellow cast members, how do you see their characters developing? Any that you are particularly amazed at?
JR: They are all extremely talented. Many of us have worked together on kids’ productions in the past, so it’s alike a big reunion and playtime during rehearsal.
LA: What do you feel are the "wow" elements of How I Became a Pirate
JR: The lyrics to the songs are very funny, and the music is great! The characters each have a personal story that comes thorugh in the show.
LA: What is your favorite pirate movie?
JR:I have always wanted to be Peter Pan, especially in the movie Hook! I would love to be young forever and be able to fly!
LA: What is the best pirate job to have and why?
JR: Sharktooth’s! He just roams around the ship all day and tells others what to do because he’s the oldest and wisest!
LA: What is your favorite song from How I Became a Pirate and why?
JR: I am partial to my song, I’m Really Just a Sensitive Guy! However, I think my next favorite is Pirates Dot Aargh! because I think it is very clever and funny.
LA: What is your favorite pirate word/slang/phrase?
JR:Flibber the Gibbet! (Pronounced: flib-er the jib-ette) Just because it sounds funny.
LA: Please tell us a little bit about yourself?
JR: This is my 4th production on stage at Lyric, and my 3rd kids show. It feels like home here, and its great to work with actors who have become friends! Currently I work for 4-H as the Program Coordinator in Sherburne County. I have been dancing and singing since I was very young, and have always loved theater. I have a BA in Public Communication from UW-Eau Claire as well as a Minor in Dance.
