Lyric Arts had a chance to interview Ruby Carlson who is performing in the ensemble in Footloose . Read on to hear what she has to say about her experience thus far! LA: Tell us a little bit about why this particular musical interested you?
RC: I saw the movie recently and it looked like it would translate well onstage. I also love dancing and this show is pretty dance-heavy.
LA: For those that are unfamiliar with Footloose can you tell us about the show?
RC: Footloose is basically a story about a city boy who moves to a small town in Texas where dancing is against the law. He helps the town to come to terms with the terrible accident that caused the law to be passed and rallies for a dance for the high schoolers.
LA: Talk about the character that you play in Footloose. How have you developed this character?
RC: I am in the Teen Ensemble in Footloose. I feel like all of us in the ensemble are trying to get in touch with our inner 1980’s teen and trying to show that onstage.
LA: Why should people come and see Footloose?
RC:Footloose is a fun show and we have a strong cast who all work VERY hard!
LA: Talk about your fellow cast members, how do you see their characters developing? Any that you are particularly amazed at?
RC: All of our cast members have definitely put some time into developing their characters. Nykeigh Larson, who is playing Rusty, has formed a hilarious character.
LA: What do you feel are the "wow" elements of Footloose?
RC: I feel like the entire show is a “wow” element. The leads are all amazing actors and we’ve all been working really hard on the dances and music. It’s going to be a great show!
LA: What is your favorite aspect of the show?
RC: My favorite aspect of the show is putting together the big musical numbers! The music in the show is great and our choreography is awesome so putting it together is hard work but it is so cool when we can run the whole number! I get goosebumps sometimes!
LA: Tell us what is something that you are particular excited about this show coming to together? For example, a certain scene, costumes, set, lights, etc?
RC: I just can’t wait for the entire show to come together! I’m very excited to have all the components of the show together.
LA; What is your favorite play or musical? Why?
RC: My favorite musicals are RENT, In The Heights, Wicked, Gypsy, and All Shook Up. I’ve seen the first 4 shows and LOVED them and I took part in All Shook Up last summer at Lyric Arts and I loved that show as well.
LA: What is your dream role to play on stage?
RC: One of my dream roles is to play Penny in Hairspray!. It seems like a really fun part.
LA: What is the first production you were ever involved with? What did you do in the production?
RC: When I was in first grade, I played the title role in The Hesitant Hibernator. It was a show about a bear who didn’t want to hibernate.
LA: Please tell us a little bit about yourself?
RC: I just finished my sophomore year at Coon Rapids High School, where I am part of theatre, dance team, band, and National Honors Society.
LA: Any other area that you would like to comment on?
RC: Lyric Arts is such an amazing place. I think of it as a second home during the summer.
