Lyric Arts had a chance to interview Sally Kimmes who is performing as Eleanor Dunbar in Footloose . Read on to hear what she has to say about her experience thus far! LA: Tell us a little bit about why this particular musical interested you?
SK: I LOVE this movie – I have probably watched it 100 times! (only a slight exaggeration) It came out when I was in high school, growing up in a town of 500 people. I totally connected with the characters and still do!
LA: Talk about the character that you play in Footloose. How have you developed this character?
SK: I play Eleanor Dunbar, member of the city council, wife of Coach Dunbar.
LA: Why should people come and see Footloose?
SK: The young people in this show are AMAZING! The dancing and the energy are phenomenal!
LA: Talk about your fellow cast members, how do you see their characters developing? Any that you are particularly amazed at?
SK: It was amazing to see how much each person was “in character” from day one!
LA: What do you feel are the "wow" elements of Footloose?
SK: The dancing!
LA: What is your favorite aspect of the show?
SK: Watching (and listening!) to how the cast responds to the direction given by our amazing staff which takes each piece to a higher and higher level!
LA: What is your favorite play or musical? Why?
SK: Billy Elliot – hands down!! Like Footloose, it is an honest portrayal of a boy with a dream and how he makes the most of every opportunity to make that dream come true. I love the physicality and emotion of the show. It pulls at every heartstring! And the dancing is amazing!
LA: What is your dream role to play on stage?
SK: Elphaba in Wicked, Billy’s grandma in Billy Elliot or any role opposite Matthew Morrison!
LA: What is the first production you were ever involved with? What did you do in the production?
SK: I think I was Big Billy Goat Gruff in 1st or 2nd grade. I was involved in every school production 7th – 12th grades.
LA: Please tell us a little bit about yourself?
SK: I am married to John and we have one amazing daughter, Dariya, who is also enraptured with theater. I am an elementary school Library Media Specialist at Fair Oaks Elementary School in Osseo Area Schools. I love to knit and sew and draw – and, of course, read! I love to cook and bake but I hate to clean. Gladiolas and tulips are my favorite flowers. I lived in Minsk, Belarus from 1992-1994 and my favorite thing to do there was go to the Opera – tickets cost less than $5!
LA: Any other area that you would like to comment on?
The Lyric Arts Theater is a fabulous space to see a play! ! I really wish I could watch the show from the front row! It is a wonderfully intimate space – so beware or you may have an actor “cutting Footloose” right into your lap.
