Lyric Arts began providing high-quality theatrical experiences for school groups with School Day Matinee performances of our family-friendly productions in 1999. Since then, we have expanded our offerings to include Tours & Workshops, available both throughout the year and immediately following our School Day Matinee performances, that can be customized to meet your groups' specific needs.

School Day Matinees

Every year, Lyric Arts provides School Day Matinee performances for two of our season's most family-friendly productions. These selections are specifically designed to entertain students while also introducing them to the performing arts and classic storytelling in a professional setting.

School Day Matinees are made available to school groups (including home school and daycare groups) of 10 or more students at the special price of $8 per ticket. Plus, teachers receive one free ticket with every 12 student tickets reserved. Tickets may be paid for or invoiced once a final count is given on the day of the performance. Invoices are not available for home school or daycare groups.

2017-2018 School Day Matinee Performances

Coney Island Christmas

By Donald Margulies
Directed by Elena Giannetti

Coney Island Christmas introduces us to Shirley Abramowitz, a young Jewish girl who, much to her immigrant mother’s exasperation, is cast as Jesus in the school’s Christmas pageant. As Shirley, now much older, recounts the memorable story to her great-granddaughter, the audience is treated to an enchanting, timeless tale of what it means to discover our own holiday traditions.

Pulitzer Prize-winner Donald Margulies weaves together nostalgia, music, and merriment in this new seasonal classic for people of all ages and all faiths.

A Wrinkle In Time

By John Glore
Directed by Anne Byrd

In a new play by John Glore, adapted from the beloved 1962 novel by Madeleine L’Engle, one of literature’s most enduring young heroines, Meg Murry, is back—braces, stubbornness, and all—to join forces with Mrs. Whatsit, Charles Wallace and more to battle malevolent forces so she can rescue her father and save humanity.

This enduring classic is filled with adventure, fantasy, and action, and leads to Meg proving, without question, that love CAN overcome evil.

Tours & Workshops

When you bring your students to a School Day Matinee, you can also include a backstage tour and a hands-on theater workshop for your group! Get a full tour of the theater (stage, backstage, makeup & dressing rooms, scene shop and costume shop), then stay for a fun workshop taught by a member of the cast or Lyric Arts staff member. It's a highly interactive, engaging way to introduce all ages to the world of theater!

Fees are $4 per student (teachers and adult chaperone fees are waived) and we can accommodate up to 100 students per 2-hour visit. The Tour & Workshop begin immediately following the School Day Matinee performance.

We also offer standalone Tours & Workshops independent of School Day Matinee performances at the same price.

Lyric Arts will design a workshop or series of workshops to meet the needs and interests of your students. We will work with you to custom-tailor a program that works with your schedule and learning goals. We will also provide the teaching artist, classroom, and performance space.

Example topics:

  • Acting
  • Audition Prep
  • Improvisation and Sketch Comedy
  • Musical Theater
  • Shakespeare (study and performance)
  • Playwriting
  • Technical Theater and Design
  • Theater History

Don’t see the topic you want? No problem–we’ve got experience in designing a wide range of curriculum beyond the topics listed above. Just contact our Education Director, Adrian Lopez-Balbontin, at (763) 233-0804 or adrian@lyricarts.org to create your own unique program!
