After years apart, Minneapolis musicians John Munson and Matt Wilson have banded together once more as The Twilight Hours to create an album of soaring beauty, Stereo Night. The ten songs, released nationally January 26, are shining jewels of melody and emotion, beautifully sung and lovingly arranged.
In the nuclear glow of the late 1980s, the two began their musical careers with the band Trip Shakespeare, a group that featured the big harmonies of Munson, Wilson and Wilson’s brother, Dan. When that group ran aground eight years later, Munson joined with Dan to form Semisonic, a trio that scaled the heights with the number one hit, “Closing Time,” and a platinum album. Meanwhile, Matt struck out on a solo career. His self-released album, Burnt, White and Blue, recorded with the help of Munson and other friends, stands as one of the greatest undiscovered albums of the 1990s.
Time and love brought our heroes together again at the century’s end, reuniting them as an acoustic duo, the Flops. Wilson and Munson approached their new project as fun and games until their recordings began to take on emotional weight and majesty. Drums, piano and electric guitars began to find their way into every song until the mellow rock classic, Stereo Night, emerged. The album’s ten tracks comprise a unified journal of heightened emotion and lyrical invention. And in it Munson and Wilson have created a musical document for the ages.
