Teens & Tweens (ages 10-17)

Our teen programs help young actors move to the next level.  Each class focuses on a key topic important to teen actors and helps them round out their acting skills.  All levels of actors are welcome!  No previous experience is necessary.

Students should wear comfortable shoes (No flip flops or clogs) and bring a water bottle to each class.

Theater Skills Mash-up!   **Ages 12 and up**

We have assembled talented theater professionals from the area to share their knowledge with you! Dig deep into key theater topics, both on stage and behind the scenes in our 4-day Theater Skills Mash-up workshop series.

Come for a 1/2 day or full day session, or attend all four days. It’s up to you!

Monday June 11, 2012:

  • #10305- Acting on Stage with Laura Bidgood, Lyric Art’s Director of this season’s Pinkalicious!  – work on scenes, build characters, perfect your stage presence and gain valuable coaching from a seasoned director.  Time:  9:30 a.m. – NOON
  • #10306 – The Voice with Tony Johnson – Learn about the world of Voice Over and how to use your voice on stage to create characters through accents, projection and quality.  Time:  12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Tuesday June 12, 2012:

  • #10307 – Improvisation with Michael Bruckmueller – Michael brings all of his High School Improv Team tricks to Lyric Arts so you can experience the entire world of improve theater.  Time:  9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (1/2 hour lunch break from 12:00 – 12:30)

Wednesday June 13, 2012:

  • #10308 – Costume Design with Shannon O’Black – our resident costume shop manager will walk you through the entire process of costuming a show.  Have fun digging around our massive Lyric Arts costume room to create fantastic characters!  Time:  9:30 a.m. – NOON
  • #10309 – Stage Make-up with Laura Bidgood – from beautiful to ghoulish, Laura will explain, demonstrate and have you try out different stage make-up techniques.  Get your own stage make kit organized so you’re ready for the next show!  Time:  12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Thursday June 14, 2012:

  • #10310 -Lighting Design, Sound and Tech with Matt McNabb – work hands on with Matt in our theater to design stage lighting, run sound and learn about the tech side of a theatrical production.  There’s more to it than meets the eye!  Time:  9:30 a.m. – NOON
  • #10311 – Stage Combat wit Barb Hynes-Tomzeck – physical and fun!  Learn how to stage fight, prat fall and sword fight without harming a hair on anyone’s head!  Time:  12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Tuition:  $25.00 per session, $45.00 per day, $150.00 for all four days (save $30.00!)

The Art of Improvisation; and Other Acting Techniques (#10296) Ages 10 – 13
Boost your listening skills, concentration and ability to think on your feet! Improvisation is a skill every actor wants to have in their tool belt. Discover what it’s like to be spontaneous on stage and have more fun than you ever thought was possible in this face-paced workshop.

Instructor:  Michael Bruckmueller  –  Michael is a teaching artist at ComdeySportz in Calhoun Square, as well as an Improvisation Coach for local High Schools

Performance Theater:  American Girl Power! (#10299)  Ages 10 & up
Courage, honesty and strength surround every American Girl character.  No matter what era they come from each American Girl exudes a positive energy.  Who is your favorite?  Bring her to life on our Lyric Arts stage this summer!  Each student will choose their favorite American Girl character and bring them to life in a live presentation using song, dance, acting and narration.

Instructor:  Deborah Schee  –  Deborah is our resident “American Girl Instructor” and has created several workshops exclusive to Lyric Arts Main Street Stage featuring American Girl characters.

Date:  Monday – Friday July 30 & 31 August 1 & 2, 2012

Time:  Monday – Thursday:  1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Friday: 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 a.m.

Musical Theater: Back to the 50’s! (#10302) Ages 10 – 13
Poodle skirts, leather jackets, bobby socks, and some of the greatest music of all time. You’ll act, sing and dance with your fellow classmates to your favorite 1950s songs.  as you master your “triple threat” abilities on stage. Wop baba lumop a wap bam boom!

Instructor:  Kym Chambers-Otto  –  Kym was most recently seen in Cinderella at the Ordway in St. Paul.

Piano Accompanist:  Kris Olson  –  Kris was the musical director for this season’s production of Pinkalicious the Musical.

Date:  Monday – Friday July 16 – 20, 2012

Time:  Monday – Thursday:  9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and Friday: 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 a.m.

Performance Theater:  The Hobbit (#10303) Ages 10 & up
Learn how to create a character, build your stage presence and experience all aspects of putting together a performance. Professional actress Kristen Mathisen will be your guide through this fantastic, fanciful story of “The Hobbit”…a great opportunity to have fun while challenging yourself and improving your skills!

Instructor:  Kristen Mathisen  –  Kristen was last seen on our Lyric Arts stage in the role of Dinah in Dixie Swim Club.

Musical Theater: Dancing Through Life, the Songs of Wicked (#10304) Ages 13 – 17
No Broadway musical has been adored by fans of all ages quite as much as Wicked. Act, sing and dance to a medley of these moving, challenging songs. Let Kym share her expertise as a professional musical theater actress to help you master your “triple threat” abilities on stage and bring to life the fantastic characters of this timeless musical.

Audition Prep Night! (#10287)

Learn all about the Lyric Arts Main Street Stage audition process and sharpen your auditioning skills with hands-on practice and expert feedback from our Artistic team.  Whether you have never auditioned before, or you consider yourself an expert, you can always learn more tricks of the trade.  This session will give you the opportunity to practice auditioning in a safe and supportive environment.  Come practice cold readings from a script, singing with an accompanist, learning dance moves and polishing your audition presence.

This workshop is for everyone with small group break-outs by age group (7 – 12 years and 13 – adult).

The night begins with a 30 minute session with our Production Manager, Joanna Diem.  She will explain all of the in’s and out’s of the Lyric Arts audition process and answer all of your questions.  Parents of younger children can stay for this portion as well.

Then we will break into our two age groups and practice how to; sing, dance and do a cold read at an audition.  This is a wonderful way to have an “audition practice run” and get your skills tuned up and ready for your next audition opportunity.

Items to bring with you:  comfortable shoes you can dance in such as jazz shoes, ballet shoes, character shoes or tennis shoes, a water bottle, sheet music if you have a specific song you want to work on (optional – we will have simple music available that night), be dressed for movement and ready to have fun!
